Nshongi and Muyambi Gorilla Families Welcome Baby Gorillas

As the rest of the world celebrated Mother’s Day, Nshongi and Muyambi gorilla families of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park joined the rest of the mothers to mark their day as they welcomed 2 healthy baby gorillas. The 2 infants were born on 1st May and 25th April 2020 respectively in Rushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Southwestern Uganda. The sexes of these newly born baby gorillas aren’t certain yet given the strict restriction from mother gorillas.

According to Uganda Wildlife Authority officials, the 2 infants were born by Kabagyenyi and Bweza silverback and Nshongi who also tightly protected the newborn and then Muyambi family silverback Muyambi and the unnamed mother were spotted warming the new member in the family. Generally, gorillas usually became aggressive once they get a baby making it very challenging for anyone to draw close to them to find the sex of the baby.

gorilla tour in UgandaNshongi gorilla family is considerably the first habituated gorilla family in Rushaga sectors, comprising of about 35 members although the group kept on splitting to make new gorilla group. Presently, the family features 9 members and with the new born gorilla, Nshongi group now consists of 10 individuals.

Muyambi gorilla family is presently the newest family and it was opened for tourism in 2019. It features 6 individuals and the unnamed mother gorilla migrated to this family from the wild. Originally, it was a member of Mubare group before breaking away to join the now Muyambi group.

Remarkably, the new born infants are a great indication of successful gorilla conservation efforts and undeniably, the most incredible news in the country’s tourism sector. According to UWA, there has been enhanced integrity of conservation areas which has also contributed greatly in an increase in the number of wildlife species in Uganda hence boosting visitor experiences while on Uganda safaris.

As per the recent gorilla census, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park presently hosts an estimate of about 459 mountain gorillas. Today, this gorilla safari park attracts thousands of trekkers for gorilla trekking. The rest of gorillas which make up the presently 1063 mountain gorillas live in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Kisoro district, Southwestern Uganda; Volcanoes National Park in Northwestern Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is carried out in anyone of the 4 regions. These include Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors in the South, Buhoma region in the North and Ruhija area in the East. Interestingly, the 4 regions each comprising of habituated gorilla families which make up a total of about 20 groups set for gorilla tracking safaris in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Cost of gorilla permits in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

An estimate of about 160 gorilla permits are available and can be booked by tourists on Uganda gorilla safaris to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park alone. Every gorilla permit in Uganda goes at $600 only if you are a foreign non-resident, $500 for foreign resident then shs.250000 for East African citizens. It should be noted that these rates run till 30th June, 2020 then beginning 1st July, 2020 travelers on Uganda gorilla tours will need $700 to reserve a gorilla permit in case you fall under category of foreign non-residents, $600 for those under category of foreign residents and East African citizens will still pay shs.250000.
