Magashi Tented Camp lies suitably within the picturesque northeastern side of Akagera National Park that boasts of its exceptional savanna grassland, Lakes, Swamps, grassy low mountains, woodland and above all a major refuge to Rwanda’s savanna grassland dwellers including the big five game in Africa-elephants, buffaloes, lions, rhinos, leopards as well as other wildlife species.

Its strategic location along the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga rewards travel endeavors the fact that this is a major refuge to hippos, crocodiles while in the wetland areas, there are sitatunga antelopes and shoebill stork. Interestingly, this park has undergone a drastic transformation in the previous 8 years and its wildlife population is on increase. While on game drive, you have a chance to view wildlife species such as giraffes, leopards, lions, spotted hyenas, zebras, the cape buffaloes and others. There are also over 520 bird species for you to be spotted at this park including shoebill storks, red faced barbet a mention but a few.

Currently, this park has become almost 75 percent self-financing and this has been geared by tourism that also supports the surrounding local communities. Over 36000 visitors were registered in 2017 alone and most of these were Rwandan nationals. In a move to support Akagera and the country’s natural heritage, tourism plays a significant role when it comes to long term sustainability while also embracing responsible eco-tourism and conservation. Many strict conservation policies have been put into place in this area including introduction of highly trained anti-poaching force which patrols the whole park. The Rwandan genocide of 1994, claimed nearly a million lives of Rwandans and left many as refugees most of which, confined around the park areas and within few years, this protected area became refuge to over 40000 cattle. When settlers were allowed to get property, tourism become low and this protected area was open to poaching. However, things changed when the nonprofit conservation organization African Parks partnered with Rwanda Development Board to form a 20 year management agreement. It is from this agreement that they became responsible of the daily management of this park and today, its wildlife species are thriving and tourism is at a boom.

This tented camp, was funded partly by The Howard G. Buffet Foundation with main aim of contributing to protection and development of this area thus making it the latest wilderness tented camp at Akagera National Park. It is also being developed in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and Africa Parks.

In conclusion, Magashi Luxury Tented Camp is remarkably one of a kind hospitality facilities you need not to miss to spend a night on while on Rwanda safari. This new tented camp is run by wilderness safaris which recently opened up the luxurious Bisate safari lodge at Volcanoes National Park. For any plans to visit Akagera National Park for wildlife safari, consider this luxurious tented camp a must for your overnight stay and you won’t regret in life.
