Uganda has a bird checklist of over 1080 bird species. Our 2 days Uganda bird-watching tour is designed for you to explore the rich-birding sites in the pearl of Africa. This special birding safari in Uganda covers two iconic bird-watching locations, Mabamba wetland, and the Botanical gardens.

Mabamba wetland is one of the most visited birding spots in Uganda, an ideal location to find a variety of aquatic birds and a record of over 260 bird species. Mabamba swamp/Wetland is a recognized Ramsar Site and Wetland of International Importance, an excellent location to sight the shoebill storks.

Other birds to look out for in this Ramsar site include the papyrus yellow warblers, blue swallow, white-throated bee-eaters, yellow-billed storks, yellow-rumped tinkerbird, yellow-throated greenbul, yellow-billed kite, yellow-billed ducks, white-faced whistling-duck, whiskered terns, violet-backed sterling, etc.

Detailed Itinerary: 2 Days Uganda Bird Watching Tour

Day 1: Botanical Gardens & UWEC birding tour

Start your birding expedition early in the morning, and you will visit UWEC where 170 bird species and other captive animals live. 7 weaver bird species exist at UWEC (including the orange weavers, and Northern masked weavers). After the morning birding, proceed to Entebbe Botanical Gardens, home to more than 150 bird species.

The expected birds to identify at the botanical gardens include pygmy kingfishers, red-chested cuckoos, grey-capped warblers, grey woodpeckers, Ross’s turacos, black kite, African green pigeon, Tooro olive green greenbul, scarlet chested sunbird, olive bellied, black bishop, and more. Evening relaxation and overnight stay at the Papyrus Guesthouse.

Day 2: Mabamba wetland shoebill trekking

Mabamba wetland shoebill trekking begins in the early morning after breakfast. This wetland is rich with birds and expects to encounter more than shoebill storks. Other varied birds of interest on the Mabamba wetland birding tour include the purple gallinule, pallid harrier, white spotted flufftail, western banded snake eagle, African fish eagle, palm nut, and hooded vultures, red-faced cisticola, long-crested eagle, great white pelicans, fork-tailed drongo, double toothed barbets, black-headed weavers, blue breasted bee-eaters, black-headed gonoleks, Angola swallow, African purple swamp-hen, and more.
