Murchison Falls National Park

Formerly called Kabalega National Park, Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected area and one of its most amazing safari locations. The park, named for the massive Murchison Falls, one of the strongest waterfalls in the world, is situated in the Albertine Rift Valley in northwest Uganda. The districts of Masindi, Nwoya, Buliisa, and Kiryandongo enclose it. Samuel Baker named the park in 1864 in Sir Roderick Murchison’s honor, and in 1952 it was formally gazetted as a national park. It is around 3,840 square kilometers in size and has a variety of habitats, including riverine vegetation, savannah plains, woods, and beautiful forests like Budongo and Kaniyo-Pabidi.

One of Uganda’s most well-known safari locations is Murchison Falls National Park, which is renowned for its remarkable birdlife, breathtaking waterfalls, and profusion of animals. Numerous animals, reptiles, and primates from various environments may be found in the park. Along with primates like chimpanzees, blue monkeys, and olive baboons, visitors may see elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, Uganda kobs, hartebeests, and oribis.  

The park protects more than 450 bird species, from waterbirds to forest and savannah species, so bird enthusiasts are equally delighted. The shoebill stork, African fish eagle, Abyssinian ground hornbill, herons, lapwings, turacos, jacanas, and several more uncommon and vibrant species are among the highlights that make Murchison a veritable wildlife paradise.

Leading Game Drives

Without a guided game drive, a safari in Murchison Falls National Park is not complete. Drives throughout the morning and afternoon provide excellent wildlife encounters, enabling tourists to see a variety of creatures in their native environments. Queen’s Track, Buligi Circuit, and Albert Track are popular game-viewing roads. The best way to travel these roads is in a 4×4 safari vehicle; each journey takes two to three hours. 

Watching Birds

One of the best places to go birdwatching in Uganda is Murchison Falls National Park. A remarkable variety of bird species from savanna, forest, and marsh environments may be found in the park. Papyrus gonoleks, African blue-headed orioles, fork-tailed drongos, white-crested shrikes, the uncommon shoebill stork, and many more birds are worth keeping an eye out for. 

Cruises via boat or launch

Aquatic fauna may be seen up close on a guided boat or launch excursion along the Victoria or Albert Niles. You may anticipate seeing a wide range of water birds, hippos, and Nile crocodiles. African fish eagles, African skimmers, blue-spotted doves, and the famous shoebill stork are frequently sighted.
