4 Days Uganda Gorillas & Mt Sabyinyo Hiking – Gorilla Trekking & Volcano Adventure

4 Days Uganda Gorillas & Mt Sabyinyo Hiking: This short yet rewarding adventure combines mountain gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park with a challenging hike up Mount Sabyinyo, one of the dramatic volcanoes of the Virunga Massif.

Ideal for travelers seeking a focused gorilla experience combined with highland hiking, this itinerary takes you to Uganda’s smallest national park on the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. You will track the habituated Nyakagezi gorilla family and summit the three peaks of Mount Sabyinyo for spectacular views across three countries.

Why Choose This 4 Days Uganda Gorillas & Mt Sabyinyo Hiking Safari?

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only place in Uganda where you can combine gorilla trekking with volcano hiking in the same park. The park forms part of the greater Virunga conservation area and is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla group – the sole fully habituated mountain gorilla family in Mgahinga.

Mount Sabyinyo (approximately 3,645 m) offers one of the most rewarding day hikes in southwestern Uganda, with three distinct peaks and panoramic views into Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. This compact 4-day Uganda gorilla trekking and hiking safari is perfect for active travelers who want both a great-ape encounter and a memorable mountain experience without a long itinerary.

Best Time for This 4 Days Uganda Gorilla & Hiking Safari

The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the most favourable conditions for both gorilla trekking and volcano hiking, with firmer trails and clearer views.

However, gorilla tracking operates successfully year-round. The hike up Mount Sabyinyo is more enjoyable when the weather is dry and visibility is good.

What to Expect on Gorilla Trekking and the Sabyinyo Hike

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga follows the same strict regulations as Bwindi: a maximum of eight visitors per group and one hour of contact time. The terrain can be steep and muddy.

The Mount Sabyinyo hike is a full-day activity involving significant elevation gain. Proper hiking boots, layered clothing, and a reasonable level of fitness are essential. Porters are available and recommended for both activities.
