4 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari: Experience two of Rwanda’s most celebrated national parks on this thrilling 4 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari. Carefully designed by Silverback Gorilla Tour, this short yet rewarding itinerary combines the unforgettable experience of mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park with classic big-game viewing in Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the Big Five.

Ideal for travellers with limited time who still want to see the country’s iconic wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, this well-balanced 4-day Rwanda safari delivers once-in-a-lifetime encounters with mountain gorillas and the chance to search for lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and leopards across the open plains of Akagera.

Why Choose This 4 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari?

Rwanda offers an extraordinary concentration of experiences in a compact country. This itinerary focuses on two complementary destinations: the misty volcanic slopes of Volcanoes National Park, one of the world’s premier mountain gorilla trekking locations, and the restored savannah wilderness of Akagera National Park in the east.

Akagera has undergone a remarkable conservation transformation and now supports healthy populations of lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and both black and white rhinos. A boat safari on Lake Ihema adds excellent opportunities for hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife. Combined with the emotional highlight of spending an hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family, this short safari provides a powerful introduction to Rwanda’s natural heritage.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Akagera National Park Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly met by your experienced Silverback Gorilla Tour driver-guide. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, an optional Kigali city tour can be arranged. Highlights may include the moving Kigali Genocide Memorial, Inema Arts Center, Kandt House Museum, the modern Kigali Convention Centre area, and the vibrant Kimironko Market.

After lunch in Kigali, begin the scenic 2.5-hour drive east to Akagera National Park. The journey takes you from the modern capital into the classic “Land of a Thousand Hills” countryside. Upon arrival and check-in, you may enjoy an evening game drive across the wildlife-rich northern plains, looking for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and other early sightings. Overnight in or near Akagera National Park.

Day 2: Akagera National Park – Morning Game Drive & Boat Safari on Lake Ihema After a hearty breakfast, set out for a full morning game drive in Akagera National Park accompanied by a knowledgeable park guide. Search for the legendary Big Five – lions resting under acacia trees, elephants and buffalo grazing near waterholes, rhinos, and, with luck, the elusive leopard. Your guide will share insights into animal behaviour and the park’s successful conservation story.

Around midday, stop for a bush picnic lunch while enjoying the expansive savannah views. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing boat safari on Lake Ihema. Cruise past pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and a rich array of waterbirds. With more than 480 bird species recorded in the park, including the African fish eagle and the possibility of the rare shoebill stork, the boat cruise offers a peaceful contrast to the morning’s game drive.

Return to your lodge as the sun sets for dinner and overnight under the African sky.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park – Twin Lakes Visit After breakfast, depart Akagera National Park and begin the scenic 5–6 hour drive northwest to Volcanoes National Park. The journey showcases Rwanda’s constantly changing landscapes of terraced hills, lively villages, local markets, and distant volcanic peaks.

Stop for lunch in Musanze (Ruhengeri), the gateway town to the Virunga Mountains. Arrive at Volcanoes National Park in the afternoon and check into your lodge. In the late afternoon you may choose to visit the beautiful Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, explore a nearby cultural village, or simply relax at the lodge while taking in the dramatic volcanic scenery. Overnight near Volcanoes National Park.

Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking – Transfer Back to Kigali Today is the emotional and experiential highlight of your 4-day Rwanda safari. After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for the pre-trek briefing (usually starting around 7:00–7:30 am). Guests are divided into groups of no more than eight visitors, each assigned to a habituated gorilla family and accompanied by experienced, armed park rangers.

You then set out into the forest, moving through different vegetation zones including bamboo stands as you follow the trail of your assigned gorilla family. The trek typically lasts between 2 and 6 hours depending on the location of the group and the terrain. Once the gorillas are located, you are rewarded with one unforgettable hour of close observation. Watch powerful silverbacks protecting their families, mothers caring for infants, and playful juveniles moving through the vegetation.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and checkout. Begin the scenic 2.5-hour drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may be transferred directly to Kigali International Airport or to a hotel in the city. End of your memorable 4-day Rwanda gorillas and wildlife safari.

Best Time for This 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari

Rwanda can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) generally offer the most comfortable conditions for both gorilla trekking and game drives, with firmer trails and better visibility. However, gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing remain excellent throughout the year, and the greener months bring lush landscapes and fewer visitors.

Gorilla Trekking Information

  • Rwanda gorilla trekking permits currently cost US$1,500 per person for foreign visitors and are valid for the specific trekking date.
