About Volcanoes National Park
Nestled in northwestern Rwanda near the town of Musanze, Volcanoes National Park spans 160 square kilometers of dramatic volcanic terrain along the Virunga Mountains. This UNESCO World Heritage candidate is the premier destination for Rwanda gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, protecting roughly half of the world’s remaining 1,063 mountain gorillas.
The park’s bamboo-clad slopes and afro-montane forests also shelter golden monkeys, forest elephants, and over 200 bird species. Its global fame stems from primatologist Dian Fossey, who studied gorilla families here for 18 years and is buried at the Karisoke Research Center. Today, sustainable tourism funds 10% of park revenues directly into local communities, making every Volcanoes National Park gorillas trek a conservation victory.
Why Hike Mount Bisoke?
Mount Bisoke also spelled Visoke, stands at 3,711 meters on the Rwanda–DR Congo border, one of eight Virunga volcanoes. The Mount Bisoke hiking experience rewards trekkers with a emerald-green crater lake at the summit, panoramic views of the Virunga chain, and potential sightings of buffaloes, duikers, and golden monkeys.
The moderate-to-strenuous Rwanda volcano adventure takes 6–8 hours round trip, climbing through Hagenia woodlands and giant lobelia zones. Unlike steeper neighbors like Karisimbi, Bisoke offers a challenging yet achievable day hike, this is perfect to pair with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda.
