Overview
The 3-day Kibale chimpanzee trekking tour is a memorable adventure that brings you face to face with endangered chimpanzees in their natural environment. Located in western Uganda, Kibale Forest National Park covers about 79,500 hectares of lush tropical rainforest and supports 13 primate species, including the largest population of chimpanzees. Alongside chimp trekking, the tour includes a guided Bigodi wetland walk, where you may see L’Hoest’s monkeys, black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys, blue monkeys, bush babies, and other wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, and duikers. The park is also a birding haven, with over 325 bird species including African pitta, black bee-eaters, yellow-spotted nicator, and crowned eagles.

Detailed itinerary of the 3-day Kibale National Park tour
After breakfast at your hotel or guesthouse in Kampala or Entebbe, begin a scenic road transfer to Kibale Forest National Park via Mityana, Mubende, Kyenjojo, and Fort Portal. Enjoy two interesting stopovers en route: first at the historic Nakayima Tree in Mubende, then in Fort Portal town for a delicious lunch. Before entering the park, make a detour to the fascinating Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves to explore their unique stalactites, stalagmites, and rich cultural legends, followed by a visit to the nearby crater lakes. Later, continue to your lodge to relax, enjoy dinner, and settle in for an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Kanyanchu for registration and a briefing on chimpanzee trekking guidelines. The trek begins at 8:00 am, and after 30 minutes to 3 hours of tracking, you will meet a habituated chimpanzee family and spend one unforgettable hour observing their behavior in the wild. Return to the lodge for lunch and time to relax. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, renowned for its rich birdlife such as the papyrus gonolek, as well as several primate species. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
After breakfast, depart for Kampala with a short city tour en route or upon arrival, highlighting key landmarks and local life.This marks the end of your 3-day Kibale Forest National Park tour.

Chimpanzee trekking guidelines
- Keep a minimum distance of 8 meters from the chimpanzees at all times.
- Chimpanzee trekking is restricted to participants aged 15 years and above.
- Once located, visitors are allowed to spend only one hour with the chimpanzees.
- Anyone with flu, cough, or other contagious illnesses is not permitted to trek to protect the chimpanzees.
- Non-flash cameras are allowed for taking photos.
- Only a maximum of six visitors may track a single chimpanzee group per day.
