3 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Golden Monkey Trekking – Dual Primate Adventure in Volcanoes National Park
Embark on an amazing 3 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Golden Monkey Trekking safari in Volcanoes National Park, one of the few remaining places in East Africa where both of these endangered primate species can be experienced in the same destination. Standing just seven metres from a habituated mountain gorilla family led by a powerful silverback is widely regarded as one of Rwanda’s most memorable wildlife experiences.
Volcanoes National Park protects a significant portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas and also supports the colourful, energetic golden monkeys that live in the park’s bamboo forests. This short but intense 3-day itinerary delivers two distinct primate tracking experiences without requiring an extended stay, making it the perfect choice for travellers with limited time who still want to capture the true magic of the Virunga Mountains.

3 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Golden Monkey Trekking Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park Your experienced driver-guide will greet you warmly upon arrival at Kigali International Airport. After a short introduction and briefing about your three-day Rwanda wildlife safari, begin the picturesque 2.5–3 hour drive north toward the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes.
Arrive at your lodge, check in, and enjoy lunch or simply relax with views of Mount Bisoke, Mount Karisimbi, and Mount Sabyinyo. The peaceful highland setting provides the perfect start to your journey.
If you arrive early enough, an optional afternoon visit to the nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village can be arranged. Here you can experience traditional Intore dance performances and gain insight into local and Batwa cultural traditions. Overnight near Volcanoes National Park.
Accommodation options Luxury: Bisate Lodge, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, Singita Kwitonda, or similar Mid-range: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, or similar Budget: La Palme Hotel, Kinigi Guesthouse, or similar
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Rise early (around 6:00 am) for breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters, arriving by approximately 7:00 am for the official pre-trek briefing. An expert park ranger will explain the regulations and safety precautions designed to protect both visitors and the gorillas.
Trekkers are then divided into small groups of up to eight people, each allocated a habituated gorilla family, an armed ranger guide, and optional porters. The trek through the forest typically lasts between 1 and 4 hours (sometimes longer) depending on the location of the family and daily conditions. Paths can be steeper and more slippery during the rainy season.
Once the gorilla family is located, you are treated to a breathtaking one-hour encounter, observing them from a minimum distance of about seven metres. Watch powerful silverbacks, mothers caring for infants, and young gorillas at play.
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest. Optional afternoon activities may include a leisurely forest walk or a visit to Dian Fossey’s tomb for deeper insight into the history of gorilla conservation. Overnight near Volcanoes National Park.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking & Departure After an early breakfast, transfer to Kinigi park headquarters for the golden monkey trekking briefing at around 7:00 am. These endangered primates, known for their striking golden-orange coats, live primarily in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park.
Golden monkey trekking is generally shorter and less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, typically lasting 1–2 hours. Once the monkeys are located, you spend up to one hour watching and photographing their lively movements, feeding behaviour, and social interactions.
Return to the lodge to freshen up and check out. Begin the return drive to Kigali, arriving in time for your departure flight or onward arrangements. End of your memorable 3-day Rwanda gorillas and golden monkey trekking safari.

Best Time for Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda
The dry seasons (June–September and mid-December to mid-February) are generally preferred because trails are less muddy and trekking conditions are more comfortable. The green seasons (March–May and October to mid-December) offer fewer crowds, lower lodge rates, and lush scenery. Trekking is possible and rewarding year-round.
