5 Days Uganda Primates Safari: Discover the perfect short primate adventure with this carefully designed 5 days Uganda primates safari.

Why Choose This 5 Days Uganda Primates Safari?
Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where you can encounter both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas on a single trip. Kibale Forest National Park, often called the primate capital of the world, protects more than 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shelters a significant portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas across its dense ancient rainforest.
Between the two parks you drive through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions. This efficient 5-day Uganda gorilla and chimpanzee safari maximises wildlife encounters while keeping travel days manageable – perfect for those seeking the best short Uganda primates itinerary.

5 Days Uganda Primates Safari Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Kibale National Park
After early breakfast or airport pickup in Entebbe, begin the scenic drive through Mubende and Fort Portal to Kibale National Park (approximately 5–6 hours). Enjoy lunch in Fort Portal before checking into your lodge.
In the afternoon take a relaxed community walk around the beautiful crater lakes region, enjoying spectacular views and your first introduction to western Uganda’s landscapes. Dinner and overnight at your lodge near Kibale.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale & Bigodi Wetland Tour
Rise early for breakfast and report to the Kanyanchu ranger station for a briefing. Enter the forest for an unforgettable chimpanzee tracking experience. The trek typically lasts 2–4 hours and includes up to one hour observing a habituated chimpanzee community at close range. You may also encounter red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and a rich variety of forest birds.
After returning to the lodge for lunch and rest, spend the afternoon exploring the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, excellent for additional primates, butterflies, and birdwatching. Overnight at your chosen lodge (Primate Lodge, Chimps Nest, or similar).
Day 3: Drive to Bwindi via Ishasha Sector
After an early coffee, depart Kibale for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The route takes you through the southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you have a good chance of spotting the famous tree-climbing lions.
Arrive in Bwindi in the afternoon or early evening, check into your lodge, and relax in preparation for the highlight of the safari.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
This is the climax of your 5 days Uganda primates safari. After an early breakfast and thorough briefing, set out into the misty rainforest of Bwindi for mountain gorilla trekking.
Accompanied by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you track one of the habituated gorilla families. The hike can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the group. Once found, you spend a magical hour observing the gorillas – watching them feed, interact, and rest in their natural habitat.
In the evening you may join an optional cultural walk with the Batwa community to learn about their traditional forest lifestyle. Dinner and overnight at your Bwindi lodge.
Day 5: Departure to Entebbe / Kampala

Best Time for a 5 Days Uganda Primates Safari
Gorilla and chimpanzee tracking operate successfully year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the most comfortable trekking conditions with less mud on the trails.
Shoulder months can provide quieter forests and good value while still delivering high success rates for both primate encounters.
What to Expect on the Treks
Both chimpanzee tracking in Kibale and mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi require a moderate level of fitness. Trails can be steep, muddy, and uneven. You will be guided by professional rangers at all times.
Only a limited number of visitors are allowed with each habituated group, and contact time is strictly limited to one hour to protect the animals. Hiring a porter is highly recommended and supports the local community.
