Our Story, Our Passion
Every great adventure starts with a single moment of awe. For the founders of Silverback Gorilla Tours, that moment happened deep within the misty slopes of the Virunga Mountains. It wasn’t just the sight of a 400-pound Silverback gently grooming a juvenile; it was the realization that this fragile ecosystem—and the magnificent creatures within it—needed a bridge. They needed a bridge between the world’s curious travelers and the local communities dedicated to their survival.
Silverback Gorilla Tours was born from a simple, unshakeable belief: Travel should be transformative, not just for the traveler, but for the destination. Based in the heart of East Africa, with operations spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, we are a team of local experts, veteran guides, and conservation enthusiasts. Our team has spent decades navigating the "Impenetrable" forests of Bwindi, scouting the best photography spots in Volcanoes National Park, and building relationships with the park rangers who guard these forests day and night.

Our Specialized Expertise
While many safari companies try to do everything, we chose to be masters of one specific, incredible niche: Primate Tourism. Trekking for gorillas and chimpanzees is unlike any other safari. It requires specialized permits, a high level of physical preparation, and an understanding of primate behavior. Over the years, we have refined the logistics of the “Primate Circuit” to a science. We handle the complex permit systems of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) so that you don’t have to. We know which sectors of the forest are best for seniors, which are best for avid hikers, and where to find the most habituated chimpanzee groups.
