Detailed itinerary – 4 Days Bwindi Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi Safari

Day 1: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Our driver/guide will pick you up from your Kampala hotel at the crack of dawn. From there, you’ll head south-west to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park via the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara–Ntungamo road. On your way, you’ll stop at the equator for some picture ops and souvenir shopping.

Keep going until you reach Mbarara, stop for lunch, and then keep going over the Kigezi hills until you reach Bwindi in the evening. The meal plan includes lunch and dinner, and you can choose between three different lodging options: the luxurious Buhoma Lodge, the more affordable Engagi Lodge, or the more affordable Buhoma Community Rest Camp.

Day 2: Gorilla tracking and community visit.

Before you set out into the thick jungles in search of the habituated gorilla family, make sure you have a hearty breakfast and get yourself ready. Bring water, a packed lunch, a walking stick, your backpack, and a camera to the park headquarters for a pre-tracking briefing. Once you see the family, you’ll have just an hour to capture their unique behavior in photographs.

Return to the lodge for lunch. If you’re feeling energetic, you might continue your trek into the Batwa settlement. On your visit, you will get the opportunity to immerse yourself in their culture and witness firsthand how they make fire with simple sticks, gather honey, and delight in their energetic traditional dances. While the meal package is full board, guests can choose between three different lodges for dinner and overnight: the luxurious Buhoma Lodge, the more affordable Engagi Lodge, or the more affordable Buhoma Community Rest Camp.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and visit to the Islands.

Day 3 takes you to Lake Bunyonyi, one of the most fascinating safari destinations in western/south-western Uganda, so you may relax after your experience with the critically endangered mountain gorillas. After you get at Lake Bunyonyi, which means “place of small birds” in English, you will go on a dug-out canoe trip because the lake is a popular destination for birdwatchers.

Along this route, you’ll pass through several islands, including Bwama and Punishment, where you may enjoy stunning scenery while keeping an eye out for birds. You have the option to have dinner and overnight at one of three luxurious resorts: BirdNest @Bunyonyi Resort, Bunyonyi Overland Resort, or Byoona Amagara Island Retreat. The meal plan is all inclusive.

Day 4: Departure.

After breakfast, make a lunch stop at Mbarara on the way back to Kampala. You’ll arrive in the evening, where you can either catch a flight home or check into a hotel.
