Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali city tour and drive to Nyungwe

Your 3-day Chimpanzee Trekking tour in Nyungwe begins with an early, filling breakfast and a briefing. After that, you will go on a guided city tour of Kigali, where you will see important sites in the capital of Rwanda. 
 
Following the city visit, take a picturesque six-hour drive southwest toward Nyungwe National Park. Enjoy educational stops along the journey at the National Museum, the Nyanza King’s Palace, and the Murambi Genocide Memorial Site, which provide information about Rwandan history and culture. 

 

After stopping in Butare, the second-largest city in Rwanda, for lunch, the journey will continue to Nyungwe Forest National Park. After arriving, check into your lodge, unwind, and spend the night in the middle of the rainforest. 

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe

At the Uwinka Reception Center, you will receive a thorough training on chimpanzee trekking procedures before starting Day 2 of your three-day Chimpanzee Trekking trip in Nyungwe with an early breakfast. Following the briefing, go with a knowledgeable guide at 8:00 am for the actual forest trip. 
Nyungwe Forest is home to around 500 chimpanzees, and you will have the opportunity to encounter a habituated chimpanzee community in the Uwinka area. Along the way, you may also spot other primates such as colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys, among others. Depending on the chimpanzees’ movements, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe usually lasts two to four hours. Once the chimpanzees are located, a one-hour close encounter is assured. After the hike, head back to the resort to unwind, eat dinner,  and spend the night there. 

Day 3: Canopy Walk & depart

After breakfast, depart from your lodge for an exciting canopy walk experience, where you’ll enjoy eye-level views of Nyungwe Forest’s treetops, spotting primates, colorful birdlife, and the forest’s impressive canopy from above. Day 1: Kigali city tour and drive to Nyungwe

Day one of your 3 days of Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe begins with a hefty breakfast and after, get briefed then set off for Kigali city tour. After the Kigali tour, drive southwestwards about 6 hours but have an en-route visit at Nyanza King’s Palace, Murambi memorial site, and National Museum. Enjoy lunch en-route at Butare Rwanda’s second-biggest city and proceed to your lodge in Nyungwe Forest National Park for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe

Breakfast early and start the 2nd day of the 3 days Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe with a briefing about Chimp Trekking rules at Uwinka Reception. Set off for an actual trek to see Nyungwe chimpanzees at 8:00 am with a guide.
