Kibale Forest National Park

The largest chimpanzee sanctuary and home to twelve other primate species is Kibale Forest National Park, which is situated in Uganda’s Kabarole District. Founded in 1993, Kibale is a part of the vast Kibale Conservation Area, which spans 795 square kilometers at a height of 1,200 to 1,650 meters. Experiences with Wildlife in Kibale

The amazing primate population of Kibale is well known. More than 1,500 chimpanzees are among the 13 distinct kinds of primates that call the park home. A variety of monkeys, including olive baboons, black-and-white colobus monkeys, gray-cheeked mangabeys, l’hoest monkeys, vervet monkeys, Uganda red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, pottos, and bush infants, are also visible to visitors. In addition to primates, the forest is home to huge forest pigs, golden cats, duikers, elephants, leopards, bushbucks, warthogs, sitatungas, and buffaloes. 

The Paradise of Birdwatching

With over 375 bird species, including rare endemics of the Albertine Rift, Kibale’s great avian variety is sure to thrill birdwatchers. The brown twinspot, papyrus canary, black-eared ground thrush, Cameroon sombre greenbul, African wood owl, blue-shouldered robin-chat, double-toothed barbets, and zebra waxbill are a few of the species you may observe. Trekking with Chimpanzees

Chimpanzee trekking is a popular activity in the park. Treks are guided and usually start at the Kanyanchu Visitor Center at either 8:00 am or 2:00 pm. A one-hour observation session to observe chimpanzees converse, play, and eat is included in each two to five-hour excursion. Each guide may only lead groups of up to six persons. Permits cost US$250 for foreign visitors, US$200 for foreign residents, and UGX 180,000 for East African nationals in order to participate in a hike.  

Chimpanzee Habituation

Visitors can take part in chimpanzee habituation, which entails tracking semi-habituated chimps throughout the day to observe their normal behavior, for a more immersive experience. Researchers, environmentalists, and wildlife lovers really like this experience. Early morning (6:00 am) to evening habituation trips require licenses, which cost US$300 for foreign visitors, US$250 for locals, and UGX 250,000 for East Africans.

Ideal Time to Go

Although Kibale is open all year round, the best times to go chimpanzee trekking are from June to September and December to February, when the paths are dry and easy to follow. March through May and October through November are the rainy seasons, which are also good times to go birdwatching.

How to Travel There

From Kampala or Entebbe, it takes around six hours to get to Kibale Forest National Park. Before arriving in the park via Kamwenge, the road travels through Mityana, Mubende, and Fort Portal. For the trip, a 4WD car is advised. Visitors can drive to Kibale after taking a plane from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese Airstrip for faster access.
