Detailed itinerary: Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Your 5-day safari journey will begin when you arrive at Kigali International Airport and are greeted warmly by a driver-guide from Maranatha Tours & Travel. The next step is to go southwest through Kigali in the direction of Nyungwe Forest National Park. 
 
A unique introduction to Rwanda’s stunning surroundings, the about six-hour trip is gratifying and picturesque, going through the country’s distinctive rolling green hills, lush farms, and beautiful vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes. 

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking or canopy walk

Proceed to the Kanyanchu Visitor Information Center for registration and a pre-trek briefing following an early breakfast. After that, you will be tasked with tracking a habituated chimpanzee colony in Nyungwe Forest. 
Depending on how the chimps move, the walk to find them may take two to six hours. Upon discovery, guests are granted a rigorous one-hour interaction with the chimpanzees from the time of initial observation. 
 
Take in breathtaking aerial vistas of Nyungwe Forest during an exhilarating canopy hike in the afternoon. The experience is traversing a suspended bridge that is 60 meters above the forest floor and offers expansive views of the surrounding local communities and park canopy. 
Dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge mark the end of the day. 

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Check out of the accommodation after breakfast, then start your picturesque trip to Volcanoes National Park. You will be able to take in Rwanda’s stunning scenery during a number of stops along the route for lunch, beverages, and photos.  
After arriving, have dinner and spend the night at your lodge to get ready for the trip the following day. 

Day 4: Gorilla trekking, cultural visit Ruhengeri/Musanze

Begin the day with an early morning breakfast before transferring to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing. At 8:00 AM, you join a small group of up to seven fellow trekkers and set off into the dense forest in search of your assigned gorilla family. 

An armed ranger guide will accompany you throughout the trek, ensuring safety as you hike to and from the gorillas. Once located, you will spend a strictly regulated one hour observing the gorillas up close, learning about their remarkably human-like behaviors and social interactions. 

After the encounter, hike back to the trailhead where you meet your driver and transfer to the lodge for refreshments and relaxation. This experience also offers meaningful insight into the traditions, customs, and beliefs of Rwanda’s local communities, making the day both enriching and unforgettable. 

Day 5 : Golden monkey tracking, departure

Today is the last day of your five-day journey. Transfer to Volcanoes National Park for an exhilarating golden monkey trekking excursion following an early breakfast. 
See different primate species, a variety of birds, and lush forest vegetation as you trek through the jungle in pursuit of the lively golden monkeys. You can only spend an hour interacting with the monkeys after you first encounter them, just like on other primate excursions.  
Your Rwanda primates safari will come to an unforgettable end when you start your drive back to Kigali after the hike, just in time for your departure flight.

When is the best  time  to do 5 days  Rwanda safari 

The 5-day Rwanda primates safari is most enjoyable during the dry season. This time frame, which spans June through September and December through February, is typically characterized by extended dry periods and little rainfall. Due to these circumstances, woodland routes become less muddy, which enhances trekking comfort and the general pleasure of seeing wildlife. 

Age limit for 5 days Rwanda primates safari 

Volcanoes National Park gorilla trekking requires a minimum age of 15 years. 
The minimum age to trek chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest is fifteen years old. 
Golden Monkey Trekking: Usually for those aged 15 and up As long as the visitor is in good physical condition and capable of managing strenuous, muddy forest hikes, there is no hard maximum age restriction.

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, the driver guide from Maranatha Tours and Travel will pick you and start the 5 Days safari. Drive through Kigali  south westwards  headed to Nyungwe Forest National Park.  The  6 hours’ drive to in the south rewards you with spectacular views of beautiful rolling hills and the Virunga Volcanoes .

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking or canopy walk

Canopy walk in Nyungwe ForestWake up on early morning breakfast and transfer to Kanyanchu visitor information for briefing and registration. You will be allocated a chimpanzee community  to trek.  The actual trek to meet the chimpanzees  takes between 2 -6 hours but the allowed time  with chimpanzees is strictly an hour from the time you meet them.  In the afternoon, go for a canopy walk for the great aerial views of the forest.  The experience entail walking on a bridge 60 meters above the main Nyungwe Forest. The walk rewards you great aerial views of the entire park and the neighboring communities. Dinner and overnight at your lodge

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Have breakfast , check out and embark on a drive to Volcanoes National park. You will have several stopovers for lunch, refreshment and photography. Dinner and overnight at your lodge

Day 4: Gorilla trekking, cultural visit Ruhengeri/Musanze

Have an early morning breakfast, and transfer Kinigi park headquarters for registration and pre trekking briefing.  At8am, you will join other seven travers and hike into the jungle forest searching for the allocated gorilla group. The armed ranger guided will escort you to and from the gorilla trek. Spend an hour with gorillas  as you learn and appreciate their humanly behaviors. Hike down , meet your driver and transfer to the lodge for refreshment.  The experience is an opportunity to learn  the traditions, norms and beliefs of  Rwanda local people

Day 5 : Golden monkey tracking, departure

This is the last day of our 5 Days adventure. Have an early breakfast and transfer to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey trekking adventure. Trek through the forest searching for golden monkeys, other primates, birds, and floral species . Like in other primates, the allowed time with golden mneksy is strictly an hour. You will then drive to Kigali for your departure flight

Dry season is the best time for the 5 Day Rwanda primates safari.  This period  is between June to September and December to February generally known as the dry season characterized by long droughts  and less or no rains
