Guide to Gorilla Tours in Uganda

Gorilla tours in the beautiful Pearl of Africa are so far the most magical and conducted in two places-Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in the southwest of the East African country. Uganda shelters the highest number of these primates, totaling over 480 hence making it the number one pick for Gorilla safaris. A total of about 21 gorilla groups are habituated in the two places, meaning profusely 168 gorilla permits can be sold every single day. For only $700 per person, permits can be purchased from Uganda Wildlife Authority. Learn More

Gorilla Safaris in Rwanda

Gorilla safaris in Rwanda are only available within Volcanoes National Park, in the northwest of the country. This Protected Area was established in 1925 and presently offers up to 12 habituated gorilla families for trekking hence 96 permits are obtainable every day. For $1500 visitors can acquire gorilla permits from Rwanda Development Board or via a Travel Agency and this guarantees a 2-3 hours’ drive to the Park, one hour with the mountain gorillas for photography, Park entrance fees plus Park Rangers. Gorilla Safaris in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo brings a more private and secluded version of gorilla safaris, owing to the fact that its Gorilla Parks are the least explored. However, what travelers forget is that this country provides the rare opportunity of meeting two gorilla subspecies.

The Mountain gorillas trek in Virunga National Park and the Eastern lowland gorillas can trek within Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Not only that, the country offers a cheaper option to gorilla safaris with permits costing only $400 per person for one hour encounter with the Great Apes. Learn More

Best time for Gorilla safaris

The months of June to September and December to February are considered the best for gorilla safaris. The majority of trekkers opt for these months (traditional dry months) because they seldom receive downpours thus making Parks more accessible and hiking trails less muddy or slippery.

The wet months usually receive fewer visitors, owing to the heavy downpours that make trails muddy or slippery hence treks more challenging as well as Parks difficult to access. However, the good news is that vegetation blooms hence providing more food for the primates. This, therefore, means that treks will become shorter in addition to boasting of the best backgrounds for photography.

Packing list for Gorilla safaris

You can do everything required of you to have a successful gorilla safari but if your packing list is off-track, be sure of facing more challenges or even ruining the entire experience.

Therefore, don’t forget long-sleeved shirts, breathable safari pants, lightweight rain jacket, sturdy hiking boots, insect repellant, sunglasses, waterproof backpack, basic first aid kit, gardening gloves, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, hair comb, hand and body lotion, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, wet wipes and sanitary towels for female travelers), good camera with extra memory space, batteries and charger, pair of binoculars, wide brim hat, travel documents and most importantly your gorilla permit.
