History and Origin of Kwitonda Gorilla Group

The Kwitonda group has a remarkable cross-border story. Originally formed in the mid-1990s in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the group was led by a dominant silverback named Kwitonda, which means “the humble one” in Kinyarwanda.

In 2003–2004, under pressure from competing gorilla groups in the DRC, the entire family migrated across the border into Rwanda. They settled in the area between Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga.

This migration made Kwitonda one of the few groups habituated on the DRC side that successfully transitioned and became fully habituated for tourism in Rwanda. The original silverback Kwitonda led the group until his death in 2012 due to old age.

After his passing, leadership transitioned to two subordinate silverbacks: Akarevuro and Kigoma. In an unusual and remarkably peaceful split in May 2021, the large group divided.

Kigoma took around 20 members to form the new Kwisanga Group, while the remaining group retained the Kwitonda name under Akarevuro’s leadership.

As of recent data, the Kwitonda Gorilla Group consists of approximately 19–23 members:

• 2 Silverbacks (including dominant Akarevuro)
• 8 Adult females
• 2 Blackbacks
• 3 Juveniles
• 5 Infants

Kwitonda Gorilla Group Location and Ranging Behavior

The group primarily ranges in the eastern sector of Volcanoes National Park, often found on the lower to mid-slopes of Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga. Because of its history and ranging patterns, it sometimes ventures near the border areas.

This can make the trek moderately challenging compared to groups that stay closer to the park headquarters at Kinigi. Treks to Kwitonda are often described as adventurous, involving thicker vegetation and varied terrain.

You can trek year-round, but the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer easier trails with less mud. During the rainy seasons, the forest becomes lush and green, but trails can be slippery and more physically demanding.

What to Expect and Preparation

• Fitness level: Moderate to good fitness is recommended. The terrain includes steep sections, dense vegetation, and possible rain.
• What to bring: Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, rain jacket, long trousers, gloves, hat, binoculars, camera (no flash), walking stick, water, and snacks.
• Rules: Follow strict gorilla trekking guidelines — no touching, maintain distance, no eating or drinking near gorillas, turn away if coughing, and always obey the rangers.
• Age requirement: Minimum 15 years old.
